Currently, few drugs are available for acute treatment of stroke, other than clot-dissolving drugs that are administered emergently to dissolve clots and restore blood flow to the brain. Despite more than 1,000 attempts to develop drugs that can strengthen and protect the nerve cells of the brain to enable them to better handle the lack of oxygen, thereby preventing cell death and reducing brain damage, as yet no such product is available on the market. Edvince has chosen a different approach to minimize damage from stroke.
Regardless of the underlying cause of stroke, blood vessels in the injured area or its vicinity react by constricting, which aggravates the injury and is the reason why many patients are affected by vasospasm and extensive penumbra. Therefore Edvince is developing drugs to prevent cerebral vessels from going into spasm in order to restore blood flow to the brain as quickly as possible, and thereby promote easier and faster recovery to minimize injury to the brain.
Our vision for the future is for all suspected stroke patients to be able to receive their first dose of the medication already in the ambulance or in the emergency room. Treatment will continue for only the first few days following onset of stroke.
