Focal ischemic stroke
FI – volume market with a lack of effective treatments
Focal ischemic stroke (FI) is usually caused by a blood clot that has formed in the heart in the event of an irregular rhythm or in the event of arteriosclerotic changes in the arteries to the brain. When a clot of this type breaks off and enters the brain’s vascular system, it stops blood flow, leading to oxygen deprivation in the affected tissue and later in the brain, resulting in cell death. Initially the core of acute ischemia is rapidly formed and difficult to treat by methods of thrombolysis and extraction of the clot. A major part of the FI damage is the penumbra which is the larger part of the ischemic damage after FI. Preclinical studies have revealed that EDV2209 can markedly reduce the size of the penumbra after Focal ischemic stroke. Edvince is developing a systemic drug candidates based on inhibition of the MEK/ERK1/2 signalling pathway – a key mechanism involved in ischemic tissue damage. The drug candidates are administered intravenously and have the potential to address a fundamental need in today’s stroke care, and could be drugs that protect the brain and prevent or reduce lifelong disability.
