Patent and trademark protection
Patent portfolio and intellectual property rights
Edvince has built up a strategically positioned and well-balanced patent portfolio consisting of five patent families, which jointly provide comprehensive protection for the Company’s technologies and drug development within prioritised indications. The patent protection covers areas of application, formulations and manufacturing methods within stroke and other ischemic injury indications.
An important complement to patent protection is the fact that Edvince has received Orphan Drug Designation (ODD) for EDV2209 in both Europe and the USA. ODD not only provides regulatory benefits such as faster processing, research support and reduced fees, but also market exclusivity following approval – typically 10 years in the EU and 7 years in the USA – which significantly strengthens the Company’s competitive position even after the expiry of the patent. This form of protection is often considered to be at least as strong as traditional patent protection and constitutes a strategically important part of Edvince’s business model.
The Company’s strategy is to ensure the fullest possible intellectual property protection in the geographical markets that are deemed to have the greatest commercial potential, including Europe, the USA and selected markets in Asia.
As an integral part of its long-term R&D strategy, Edvince is constantly evaluating opportunities for new patent applications, with the aim of strengthening the competitive protection and increasing the commercial value of the Company’s assets through exclusivity and protection against generic competition.
The patent portfolio is managed by the UK patent attorney office Abel & Imray, based in London.
